Bobbie Jane
Lancaster, aka "Ms. Bobbie", is a musician,
award-winning songwriter, preschool teacher, and
mother of two.
Bobbie began working in the Child Care
Department of the Monroe County YMCA in April of
2008. She could bring her kids to work,
get a free Y membership, and make a little extra
money. It was on a crowded day in Child Care that
Bobbie wrote her first children's song. "The
Dinosaur Dance" was written on the spot to give
some rather aggressive boys a positive and
constructive avenue for their energy.
In September 2008, Bobbie was asked to
teach preschool and the YMCA created a new
position for her as "The Music Lady".
She would receive lesson plans from the preschool
teachers, write songs based on those plans, then
visit each class with her mandolin for a weekly
music session. Within weeks, she had written 20
children's songs with topics such as using good
manners, shapes, the changing seasons, and
sharing.
Bobbie went to the studio to record in
November, and Little
Folks was released in
December of 2008. Since the official
release, sales at the YMCA have already raised
several hundred dollars in scholarship money for
children & families. Bobbie's follow-up CD,
Little Folks 2 - Live and Laughing was
released in late 2009. Both CDs are available on
Bobbie's CDBaby
site.
In 2009, Bobbie added several Interactive
Music Workshops to her product line. She
stays busy visiting area libraries, preschools,
family festivals, and community centers.
At the suggestion of several Indiana
librarians, Bobbie has developed a series of
programs for Early Childhood
Professionals, which demonstrate the use
of music as a behavioral tool, a way to jump
start early literacy, and a method to encourage
creativity & family bonding.
